Samsung Galaxy Tablet

OMG you guys!! I just got this tablet and it is truly the ish!! For those who don’t know this thing is like a large Android cell phone. I say large but ladies it fits in your purse quite easily and I could even fit it in the back pocket of my jeans. That said the screen is big enough to comfortably read a book or watch a movie on.
When I got it the first thing I did was install all the same apps that I use on my android phone onto this device. Then I figured out some great apps that I never bothered with on the phone. The most obvious choices for these are the Amazon kindle and Barnes and Noble nook apps. I downloaded some samples of some books just to see how comfortable it was to read them on this device without committing to buying them in this format. I must say I’m impressed. To be honest it is bigger than if you got the paperback version of a book and not much smaller than if the book was in hard cover.
The thing about this device is that it is so much more than an e-reader ever dared to be. It’s much more portable than a laptop and more comparable to its functionality as far as the things you can do on it. Android phones are very popular now –partially thanks to brands like Samsung putting out many of these phones in the last year or so – so many people will already be familiar with how to use this device.
To be honest the possibilities of what you can do with this device are only as limited as what apps you can find for it, and there are tons out there.
Hardware and memory wise it boasts 2 gigs internal and a 16 gig micro SD card is included with the device. It runs the android OS 2.2 which allows you to run apps off the SD card as well. It has a front facing camera and a rear facing camera with a flash. I would definitely recommend this over any of the e-readers if you want something that does just a little bit more –or a lot more for that matter.

Jealousy

Alright so this goes sort hand in hand with the cheating blog from a couple days ago. But not all jealousy is related to cheating. Sometimes it could simply be that someone has something or someone that you want.
Now the emotion of jealousy has terrible connotation but the fact is we all get jealous of someone for one reason or another at some points in our lives. Sometimes a little jealousy isn't that bad for things. For example, your significant other enjoying you getting a little bothered seeing them talk to someone else. I'm not talking about you flipping out and making an ass of yourself because you think you saw something that didn't really happen. I'm talking about maybe just a little facial expression or sign like hmmm should I be worried. I have to admit being called out on this very thing and I thought "oh shit!"
Now, this could have been a lot worse. Sometimes we allow our jealousy to cause us to do crazy shit. Some people get so jealous they're driving by their lover's house at all hours, invading our partner's privacy going through their phone and/or emails, or showing our ass in public. This is when it becomes a problem. You have let jealousy take you over and override your good sense and rational thought. This can only have a negative effect on the situation which you have now made worse.
Often times we feel our jealousy and resulting actions are totally justified. You think well I deserve that promotion or that raise or that man, woman, money, prize or whatever it is. But the fact remains it is not yours and I believe it wasn't meant to be. It sucks to admit to ourselves that we don't get to have what we want. It really sucks to be so overcome with jealousy based on incorrect info, go confront the situation in the worst possible way only to find out you were dead wrong. I know we aren't perfect and we all make mistakes but it's not always about your feelings. Think about the true consequences. Is it worth it if you happen to be wrong?

Facts versus Feelings

Often times we allow ourselves to become so overwhelmed with feeling and emotions that we tend to look over the facts that are before us. More often than not we make decisions that have a major effect on our lives based on how we feel and usually end up suffer from great regrets. You hear the statement a lot I know as it pertains to relationships “follow your heart”. Well the fact is the heart loves to love and is often blinded by emotions and personal desires that may not be what’s best for us as a whole. In our careers we have made mistakes by walking off a job or communicating recklessly out of emotion that causes us to face negative consequences that can create detrimental impacts on our lives.

Sticking to the facts is one important step that will assist is in being able to maintain self control. I know that women especially have issues with making emotional based decisions instead of following thru with what’s most logical. I am not saying all women, but based on my life observations this tends to be the case more often than not. I have been a victim myself of acting out on emotions. It is essential that we are able to pay attention to what is right before our face instead of coming up with creative ideas to justify or explain what WE have identified as variables that don’t truly exist yet preventing us from utilizing wise judgment when it comes to our decision making process.

In relationship’s women often times create excuses for men that are not demonstrating their love appropriately or not responding to a relationship in the manner that they should. Well the fact is if the man is not demonstrating love, then he doesn’t love you simple as that. It doesn’t matter what he says, it’s what he does and how he treats you. I know women sometimes will say things like “well he wasn’t showed love as a child”, when the fact is, if a man loves you regardless of what he has been through, there will be some sign and he will have not problems expressing his love in some form or fashion because he won’t be able to help himself. If your man is telling you he’s not ready for a relationship but you continue on playing the role as his woman, this is yet, another example of not paying attention to the facts and acting out on emotions and or desires of the heart believing that his heart and mind will change based on your actions. NOT!!!!

You’re at a job and you don’t like your boss. Your boss in your opinion is rude and disrespectful; you go to work and you are having a bad day, you were already emotionally frustrated before you stepped foot into work. Your boss says something you don’t like; you then respond in an inappropriate manner to your BOSS and you are written up, this was your last write up you were allowed before the termination process began, now what? Because of your feelings and emotions you have now lost your job and caused a severely negative impact on YOUR life. This is just pure justification to back up how essential it is to be able to demonstrate self control not only in this particular situation but in all areas of life. The facts here were that we all know that speaking inappropriately or declining to do what is asked of you by your boss is considered insubordination. That’s a fact. In this particular scenario another fact was, this was the last write up that could be received before the termination process began. The last fact that sticks out is the only person really having to feel the brunt of the pain of being terminated was the employee not the BOSS.

Stick to the facts and always make an aggressive attempt not to react on feelings and emotions. This will not only protect you in the long run form making a lot of bad judgment calls, but from having to deal with the other set of feelings and emotions that we are forced to face after making the wrong decisions in the first place…. BE BLESSED!!!!!!

Cheating

Yeah I Said it. It's a hot button topic. There's lots to be said about it. Why people do it? What is considered cheating? Should the relationship end automatically if one person cheats? One could write pages and pages and pages about the subject and still never cover all aspects.

A good friend and I recently had a discussion about cheating. While she and I are going to have to agree to disagree on this one her opinion was an interesting one. Basically, it was that if you get cheated on you can often times blame it on yourself. I thought wow that's crazy! I'll admit that in some cases people you are with are not the easiest to deal with in some or many respects and thus you would be tempted to do something drastic like leave or at least go exact revenge by having a night of fun without them. In other cases the same concept could be applied to something more serious. For example, lets say at one point you and your significant other had a great relationship but now life has sort of come between you. You don't just have nice talks like before so one or both parties stray to others at first just for some good talks. Eventually feelings start to rise and next thing you know there's an attraction.

This is where the question of what is considered cheating really comes in. At this point technically these people have done nothing wrong, or have they? They have now allowed another party to fulfill things that their partner should be doing for them. In my opinion that's when it really walks the line of cheating. I would say if that's all that happened then all would be well. The problem is it all too often does not stop there and then they proceed on to physical expressions which no matter how small or "insignificant" are still cheating.
In between these two stages is where the partner often starts to notice because you're obviously getting that need filled somewhere else because you're not asking them to do it anymore. Well this is where I see her point because well you had your chance and you ignored the wish so they found someone else to take care of it. It was a need, not a want. Because of our survival instincts as humans we will always do whatever we feel it takes to fulfill a need.

There are other instances where the question of is it cheating is very very obvious. If your spouse is home taking care of the kids and you're all out at the club on some stranger well that's definitely cheating. This is an example of one I feel is disproving her point that this is why people cheat: Sometimes you are happy at home. Fulfilled at home but you just find yourself in a tempting situation. Your spouse is great and wonderful but damn this _____ is fine and I just wanna taste it one time. Ok maybe once more cause she at the club again. Ok no no this is the last time. It's like being on a diet and you know you should stick to the salad at home. It's delicous and good for you and you love having it. But this girl is Mcdonalds and sometimes I think there's crack in those fries.

9 Years Ago Today...Gone To Soon: RIP Left Eye

What About Your Friends?

On this date 9 years ago, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was killed in a car accident. For those of you that may not know, she was one third of the R&B group TLC. She co-wrote one of my favorite songs from that group caled "What About Your Friends". As I think back to the lyrics of this song in particular, it makes me realize that no matter who you are friends play a big part in whether you are happy or not. Therefore, choosing the right friends to be in your life is something that should not be taken lightly.

If you want to be happy, please make sure that you look at the character of the people that you choose to be in your life. Make sure you avoid negative people. Negative people are usually close minded and see the glass as half empty. This will soon affect your view on life and you will start to become a negative person too. We all know someone like this. This is the person that is hardly ever happy about anything. If they are happy, it is usually because someone else is miserable. People that rejoice in the downfall of another human being are not real "friends" to anyone but themselves. Another group of people you need to avoid are people that try to size you up, for example, like what type of car you drive or neighborhood you live in. A real friendship is not based on comparisons of what each other has or does not have. These are materialistic minded people that are more concerned with things and not people. These are often times, the ones that brag about what they have and how much money they make. In other words, in their minds, they are better than you. If you have friends that make you feel uncomfortable in any way then drop them like a bad habit.

Who do you want to be your friend? This is your choice. Personally, I surround myself with a small group of people that I call my friends. I have 3 people in my life that I would call my best friends and 5 that I would call friends and that is it. I don't need anymore friends in my life because my old ones are doing just fine. My friends and I do not speak everyday but if we are going through something we know we can pick up the phone and talk it out 24/7. There is peace of mind knowing that you have people in your life that will not ask questions but will be there if you called and said you needed them. What is even better is when they are there for you when you don't call and whatever happens is between you and them. If required, you will take whatever situation you had to deal with and take it to the grave as will they. When your life is flipped upside down it is your real friends that will make everything right again in your world. Period.

As adults we have the luxury of being able to choose who will be in our lives and who will not. It is much easier not to ever allow someone to be in your life from the beginning instead of ending a friendship later on down the road after it has taken a toll on your mentality. I will wrap up this post with my favorite lyrics from the song "What About Your Friends", think about the people in your life that you call friend as you read the lyrics. How do they measure up? How do you measure up as a friend? Remember you must be a friend in order to have a friend..

"Every now and then I get a little easy
I let a lot of people depend on me
I never thought they would ever deceive me
Don't you know when times got rough I was standing on my own"

"I'll never let another get that close to me
You see I've grown a lot smarter now
Sometimes you have to choose and then you'll see
If your friend is true then they'll be there with you through the thick and thin"

"What about your friends?
Will they stand their ground? Will they let you down again?
What about your friends?
Are they gonna be low down? Will they ever be around?
Or will they turn their backs on you?"

Happy Easter Everyone!!

Ok I just want to ask you all, how many found that statement offensive? I f you did why did it offend you? I think it’s interesting that in the last several years of trying to be “PC” and inclusive of everyone that we have started to extinguish our own culture and traditions. If Christmas was our tradition then why is it offensive to tell someone Merry Christmas? If they choose not to celebrate that they could simply reply back with “have a nice day” or whatever the salutation for their holiday of choice for the season and we could all keep it moving.
I heard a news story about school kids and they had to call Easter Eggs “spring spheres” or something instead. I mean ok they are Easter Eggs. You’re learning about your own or someone else’s culture. What is the harm in that? We sang about and made dreidels in elementary school and let’s just say there was a tiny percentage of Jewish people in the whole school if any at all – know what I mean Vern? No one got offended about it. We were just learning about something other than our ways.
I think my point here is that the way for us to be inclusive is to learn as much about any culture who is willing to share and teach anyone who is willing to learn about our own.

“If you not bringing anything to the table you are not welcome to eat” Part 2

I feel that the promoting of women being independent has been yet another variable that contributes to the opinion that if a woman wants a man that works and is able to provide is already pre-judged as being a gold digger. You often times here men complain about women being overly aggressive and not fully understanding their role as a woman. I feel that these types of scenarios often come about because women feel like if they can work and provide for their families maintaining bills and a home, that a man should be able to do the same if not more, because he is the stronger vessel. A woman should never expect less from man than what she is able to produce for herself. In order for a woman to respect a man enough to lead, he has to be able to show her that he is able provide as for himself as well as for her. In my opinion if a woman accepts anything less, she is settling and placing a lower self worth compromising her expectations for her life as a whole.

I am not trying to send out the message that the woman should be with a man that is going to be able to provide a life of lavishness and luxury, however, what I am saying is that the man should be held responsible for paying the bulk of the bills while living within their means of course. Do I think that everyone is going to be blessed with a rich man that can provide a life conducive to her being a stay at home wife? No, that is not what I am saying at all, in fact, for the majority of the population this is not at all possible depending on your goals and wants. The economy won’t allow for such, especially if you throw a couple of kids in the equation.

Going back to my theory of the reason why God created woman 6 days after created man which was the 7th day also referred to the day of rest, indicates that all the work had already been completed by the time the woman was created. He worked alone, with God leading him, with no assistance from the woman. The woman was made to comfort and support the man not to provide for him nor teach him how unless he is her child. This to me wraps up my point in a nutshell. BE BLESSED!!!!!!!!!

The "Ghettoesburg Address"

On May 17, 2004, Bill Cosby gave a speech at the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Brown vs Topeka Board of Education Supreme Court Decision that has become known as the "Ghettoesburg Address". This speech and many more since this one has caused many people to criticize Dr.Cosby. My question is why? When did the truth become the wrong thing to state? Below you will see several excerpts from the original transcript from the speech:

"Ladies and gentlemen, these people set, they opened the doors, they gave us the right, and today, ladies and gentlemen, in our cities and public schools we have fifty percent drop out. In our own neighborhood, we have men in prison. No longer is a person embarrassed because they're pregnant without a husband. (clapping) No longer is a boy considered an embarrassment if he tries to run away from being the father of the unmarried child (clapping)
Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic and lower middle economic people are [not*] holding their end in this deal. In the neighborhood that most of us grew up in, parenting is not going on. (clapping) In the old days, you couldn't hooky school because every drawn shade was an eye (laughing). And before your mother got off the bus and to the house, she knew exactly where you had gone, who had gone into the house, and where you got on whatever you had one and where you got it from. Parents don't know that today.
I'm talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was two? (clapping) Where were you when he was twelve? (clapping) Where were you when he was eighteen, and how come you don't know he had a pistol? (clapping) And where is his father, and why don't you know where he is? And why doesn't the father show up to talk to this boy?
The church is only open on Sunday. And you can't keep asking Jesus to ask doing things for you (clapping). You can't keep asking that God will find a way. God is tired of you (clapping and laughing). God was there when they won all those cases. 50 in a row. That's where God was because these people were doing something. And God said, “I'm going to find a way.” I wasn't there when God said it... I'm making this up (laughter). But it sounds like what God would do (laughter).
We cannot blame white people. White people (clapping) .. white people don't live over there. They close up the shop early. The Korean ones still don't know us as well...they stay open 24 hours (laughter).
50 percent drop out rate, I'm telling you, and people in jail, and women having children by five, six different men. Under what excuse, I want somebody to love me, and as soon as you have it, you forget to parent. Grandmother, mother, and great grandmother in the same room, raising children, and the child knows nothing about love or respect of any one of the three of them (clapping). All this child knows is “gimme, gimme, gimme.” These people want to buy the friendship of a child....and the child couldn't care less. Those of us sitting out here who have gone on to some college or whatever we've done, we still fear our parents (clapping and laughter). And these people are not parenting. They're buying things for the kid. $500 sneakers, for what? They won't buy or spend $250 on Hooked on Phonics. (clapping)
Brown Versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem. We've got to take the neighborhood back (clapping). We've got to go in there. Just forget telling your child to go to the Peace Corps. It's right around the corner. (laughter) It's standing on the corner. It can't speak English. It doesn't want to speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk. “Why you ain't where you is go, ra,” I don't know who these people are. And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk (laughter). Then I heard the father talk. This is all in the house. You used to talk a certain way on the corner and you got into the house and switched to English. Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't land a plane with “why you ain't...” You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. There is no Bible that has that kind of language. Where did these people get the idea that they're moving ahead on this. Well, they know they're not, they're just hanging out in the same place, five or six generations sitting in the projects when you're just supposed to stay there long enough to get a job and move out.
I'm telling you Christians, what's wrong with you? Why can't you hit the streets? Why can't you clean it out yourselves? It's our time now, ladies and gentlemen. It is our time (clapping). And I've got good news for you. It's not about money. It's about you doing something ordinarily that we doget in somebody else's business. It's time for you to not accept the language that these people are speaking, which will take them nowhere. What the hell good is Brown V. Board of Education if nobody wants it?
...I mean, this is the future, and all of these people who lined up and done..they've got to be wondering what the hell happened. Brown V. Board of Education, these people who marched and were hit in the face with rocks and punched in the face to get an education and we got these knuckleheads walking around who don't want to learn English (clapping) I know that you all know it. I just want to get you as angry that you ought to be. When you walk around the neighborhood and you see this stuff, that stuff's not funny. These people are not funny anymore. And that’s not brother. And that's not my sister. They're faking and they're dragging me way down because the state, the city and all these people have to pick up the tab on them because they don't want to accept that they have to study to get an education.
Basketball players, multimillionaires can't write a paragraph. Football players, multimillionaires, can't read...Well, Brown V Board of Education, where are we today? It's there. They paved the way. What did we do with it. The white man, he's laughing, got to be laughing. 50 percent drop out, rest of them in prison.
Therefore, you have the pile up of these sweet beautiful things born by nature raised by no one. Give them presents. You're raising pimps. That's what a pimp is. A pimp will act nasty to you so you have to go out and get them something. And then you bring it back and maybe he or she hugs you. And that's why pimp is so famous. They've got a drink called the “Pimp-something.” You all wonder what that's about, don't you? Well, you're probably going to let Jesus figure it out for you (laughter). Well, I've got something to tell you about Jesus. When you go to the church, look at the stained glass things of Jesus. Look at them. Is Jesus smiling? Not in one picture. So, tell your friends. Let's try to do something. Let's try to make Jesus smile. Let's start parenting. Thank you, thank you (clapping, cheers)"
Did I miss something? Where did he say something wrong? I'm sorry, but this only motivates me to be a better parent, citizen, friend, and family member to the young people in my community. Please think hard about what Dr.Cosby said and act on his words. If you do not think there is a problem, then maybe you are part of the problem and not the solution. Real Talk.

Junk Food vs. the World

Ok I don’t know about you guys but I am so tired of how litigious our society has become. We sue at the drop of a hat. There are people that go to great lengths of hoping for something they can sue for so they can get their millions and quit their job. Some people even go so far as to create the situations falsely. We all remember the lady who “found’ a severed finger in her Wendy’s meal a few years ago and came out later and admitted she planted it there so she could sue. This woman was so selfishly wrapped up in her get rich quick scheme that she ignored who might get punished or fired or even simply be let go in connection with her false accusation.

Most recently I am hearing about the story of a woman who is suing McDonalds because in short she herself is a crappy parent who cannot regulate her child’s television time and food intake. She claims the issue is that her kids see the commercials on TV and that they are advertising to the kids not the parents. Seems she should simply be able to tell the kids no. If they don’t listen or continue to protest or beg this is not the fault of McDonalds or any other company. In the end they are YOUR kids and you have the final say on what you feed them.

There are plenty of parents whose kids don’t get to eat fast food or drink sodas at all or if they do it’s rare. I know it's hard to imagine, but there are people who have managed to overcome the evil McDonald’s commercials on the TV and simply told their kids NO. That or they have raised them eating healthy food so they won’t even want to touch fast food.

The thought process behind lawsuits of this nature is in my opinion dangerous. It illustrates a growing sense of entitlement in people since the woman is saying “nothing I don’t want my kids to see should be broadcast on TV”. In a previous post my fellow blogger Bobbi Jean stated that she watches certain things with her kids instead of simply blocking it and wanting them to think it doesn’t exist. She does this so she can explain things to her kids rather than sweeping them under the rug for them to be shocked by later when they have to deal with it on their own. Wouldn’t it make more sense to say to your kids, like with anything else you’re saying no to, well we cannot eat that all the time because it is not good for you. The bottom line here is if you can’t tell your kids no to something and then deal with it with the child or children then your problem is much greater than what McDonalds puts in its commercials and happy meals to lure children to them. It also raises the question if you can’t say no to a happy meal how are you going to teach them right from wrong about any and everything else they may come across. You won’t be able to always remove your children from situations or people they shouldn’t be influenced by. As a parent, you have to make yourself a stronger influence in their life. Don’t let a stupid commercial for some junk food and a toy that will break an hour after they get it overrule your say so as a parent.

The Miami Heat Big 3: Championship or Bust

To say that I am a sports fan is a understatement. I consider myself, not only a fan but a student of the game, especially when it comes to basketball. As a teenager and young adult, I actually used to carry a basketball in my car just in case there was a pick up game. Yes, seriously, who wouldn't want to play with their own ball? If you don't know why, then you probably never played the game. People are always asking me who is your favorite player or team? Honestly, I am not a fan of individual players or teams so who I cheer for has a tendency to change year over year based on multiple factors. The first factor is teamwork. How well does the team work together? Does the star player(s) consider themselves a part of the team? Who is the real team leader? The second factor is leadership. We all know that attitude is a reflection of leadership, right? In a team environment that is extremely important. Does the team respect the coach's leadership? My last factor is commitment. Is the organization (owner and GM) committed to winning?

Seeing Magic and Bird battle it out in the 1980s, as well as Jordan against the entire Detroit Piston team in the 1990s, I know that to win a championship in the NBA, a team needs at minimum 3 strong players. The Miami Heat organization showed the rest of the NBA and most importantly their fans they were committed to winning, when they made one of the biggest moves in sports history last year. By adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh to the same roster with Dwyane Wade they were able to get my attention for the first time in that franchises history. Yes, I know I am not the only one. As previously stated, I look for the team dynamic. When I watch the Heat play, it is truely a team effort, a well oiled machine so to speak. If you are a fan of the game, then you cannot dispute that. These guys like each other. They get along well with each other and that is something that any team on a championship run needs in order to sustain the hard climb to the top.

This year I am cheering for the Heat! My mind was made up early in the 2010-2011 season when the team was there for LeBron, as he went back to Cleveland for the first time. That game showed me the character and heart of that team. If the Heat wins the championship, they should thank Cleveland for treating LeBron the way they did after he signed with Miami. The series of incidents that followed him leaving for Miami brought that team closer together. The only way this team will not win the championship is if they lose focus. If the Heat fall short this year, it will not be because they were not the most talented team on the floor, but merely because they were outplayed. When a championship is on the line, you have to throw out all the numbers and stats because you cannot measure heart!

Gold Digger: Informal. a woman who associates with or marries a man chiefly for material gain.

In today’s society women are being looked down upon for desiring a man that is accomplished or independent for lack of a better term. If a woman prefers to have a man that has his own car, career and crib, the 3C’s that must be met in my opinion before she even considers dating or better yet even getting to know, she is looked down on as being a gold digger. There are so many songs about independent women or women that have their own as a compliment to the woman, what is the problem with women wanting that out of their men. It all goes back to the knowing and understanding of one another’s roles.

God didn’t create a woman until 6 days later after creating man. That man worked hard for those days before God blessed him with his gift which was the woman. God created man to be her head. His intentions were for the man to provide and care for the women’s basic needs. God made the woman to be comforting to a man AFTER all of his hard work. I challenge you to look at this picture. He didn’t create the woman until the day of rest….. He didn’t create her to provide for him because everything was already done. You must be able to see the logic in this. God can do what he wants to do, and has things set up in an order he wants. If he meant for the woman to be the provider and to make sure the man is taking care of in that capacity, I would dare to say that he would have created her first.

Women need to realize that by accepting a man that can’t even take care of himself will ultimately create a new set of issues to have to tend to. The man will become viewed as a liability resembling that of child. This will eventually cause the woman to begin to lose respect for the man, which is another problem in itself. I am not saying that money and love are to be viewed equally because that’s quite the contrary; however, I am saying that as an adult civilized human being men as well as women should be able to at least provide for themselves. A man should know what responsibility is and how to handle it. Being able to be lead in a household should not be foreign to him. Men should be confident in the knowledge of their role in having to work and pay bills before he even considers the pursuit of a wife. These are just basic qualifications a man should possess in general. BE BLESSED!!!!!

Irrational Fears

Many people have fears and phobias. Some of which are simply dealt with by avoiding whatever it is we’re afraid of. Some people are afraid of public speaking, certain animals, small spaces, crowds, etc. The list goes on and on. Some fears go a little bit further and lead to involuntary paralyzing responses from the person experiencing them.
For example, I myself am TERRIFIED of snakes. It goes beyond a level of ew I don’t like them. I have regularly occurring nightmares, or sometimes I’ll even simply close my eyes to go to sleep and my brain pops up images of them. Immediately I open my eyes up and sometimes literally jump up out of bed.
I think my admittedly irrational fear of these creatures has gotten much worse over the years. About 10 years ago some friends and I had been camping. As we were hiking back to our car to leave alongside the path there was a coiled up snake. By the time we noticed it, we were right next to it. We took off running and luckily no one was hurt. I remember getting far enough away to stop and actually looking behind me as though it was going to chase us.
During that incident when I went to look back my friend joked that I’d seen too many Anaconda movies. I laughed at the joke, but in all honesty I cannot watch shows or movies with snakes in them. If one is shown unexpectedly I have to look away or change the channel. Obviously, I know that the snake can’t hurt me from my dreams or the TV or a movie. However, it is the irrational fear or phobia that illicit the reaction.
According to the Wikipedia article on Phobia’s they are defined as “a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding despite the fear, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational”. Essentially, you know it’s ridiculous and highly unlikely to hurt you, but the mind is a complex entity with lots of power to convince us otherwise.
I decided to write this article after I was sitting outside in my backyard last night while my dog ran around the back yard and my mind was racing wondering if any snakes were around or could they sneak upon me? Would I be able to get inside fast enough? What about the dog? I should point out that I have never seen a snake around my property even. Not to say they’re no where around but they don’t really like people sooooo they probably wouldn’t “step to me” like "what up I came to bite yo ass."
Something that I decided to look into was the causes and treatments for this type of thing. For the causes I read that it can be caused by a parent or sibling’s reaction to those stimuli even if you didn’t see whatever it was. I guess the thought behind this is that “wow if they’re freaking out this thing must be pretty bad”. Then the idea of it becomes much worse than the thing itself. I think this is what caused it for me. I remember my mom at least once freaking out seeing a snake in our yard. I didn’t see it and when I asked her to describe it the description she gave was sooo cartoonish that I know now it couldn’t have possibly looked like this. She just didn’t want to scare me. Well short term it worked. Long term OMG I feel like I’m ruint sometimes lol. I think she’s actually less afraid of them than me. A while back I was home and she was watching snakes on a plane. I couldn’t even go downstairs until it was over. So thanks Mom for robbing me of the viewing pleasure of that Samuel L. Jackson flick!
As for the treatments I’ve read about things such as virtual reality or imagery being used to desensitize the patient. Of course, this sounds like they’re going to show me pics of snakes and make me just deal with it. There are other treatments available besides those two of course, and for anyone with similar fears or phobias or just similar issues with their own fears I can only say that I am not a medical professional and would recommend consulting one if you feel you need help. My purpose in writing this article was simply to reach out to and bring some light to these type conditions. My hope is that those suffering as well as those who care about them can have a greater understanding of it.

Politics As Usual: 545 vs. 300,000,000

I received a forwarded email the other day that caught my attention. This is odd for me because I rarely read forwarded messages. I'm sure I am not the only one, right? Anyway, this email was forwarded to me by someone that I respect who knows me well enough to not send me a lot of junk and so I opened it. The original title of this email was "The 545 Rule". I consider myself somewhat intelligent and began reading, because as far as I could recall, I had not ever heard of a 545 rule. The article was written by a retired Orlando Sentinal reporter named Charlie Reese. The central idea of this article was as follows: One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of 300 million people that are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country. Period.

We are now at the beginning of the 2012 campaign season, so please take time to just think about this 545 rule. Politicians are the only people who,  1) create problems and then campaign against them, 2) have Constitutional authority to vote appropriations, 3) write the tax code, 4) set fiscal policy and lastly 5) control the Federal Reserve Bank. Mr. Reese put it best when he wrote that those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist. If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.  They are the only people that have the power to go along with the status quo or to change it. This is why we as a part of the 300,000,000 should hold them accountable, we are their bosses.

We are the voters. We control the 545 and not the other way around. It is amazing that we forget this from time to time. Politicians are out of control. If you are not convinced by now, then let me just run down a small list of taxes that they have decided we need to pay: building permit tax, cdl tax, cigarette tax, corporate income tax, dog license tax, excise tax, federal income tax, federal unemployment tax, fishing license tax, gasoline tax, hunting license tax, inheritance tax, liquor tax, luxury tax, marriage license tax, medicare tax, personal property tax, property tax, real estate tax, social security tax, sales tax, telephone federal excise tax, telephone federal universal service fee tax, telephone state and local tax, utility tax, vehicle license registration tax, so I assume you are getting the point now. Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation had no national debt. I am not against taxes, but I am against stupid taxes. We are taxed more when the government cannot control its spending. So when 545 people are not doing their jobs properly, then they request that 300,000,000 pay more taxes to increase the nations revenue so they can give it another try. Give me a break! Let's see what we decide to do in 2012! Are we going to continue this vicious cycle or are we going to do something about it?

Real Talk Quote of The Day

"To understand how any society functions you must understand the relationship between the men and women." - Angela Davis

Most Powerful Weapon-Music

Todays music is one of the biggest threats to our society. It is destroying our youth. Music is one, if not the most powerful tool used to brainwash our children. Tracks are potent and very effective learning tools used to teach our children, for example their ABC's. Music has been around since the beginning of time and appears to be a major contributor to underacheivment in our youth. Ignorance is now made to appear glamorous and cool. If a child continues to hear the same message perhaps in different forms all day long by different artist, it unsurprisingly sticks and often times becomes a way of life. This epidemic is even more dangerous to youth in broken homes where the parents are either simply ignoring the problem, not able to take time to explain and express the importance of knowing and understanding true morals and what it truly takes to succeed in the real world. This thing that was once known as art has now been turned in to one of the most powerful weapons of mass destruction, rap music in particular, as well as Pop and R&B. There is some good music but those artist rarly get spins. The only types of music that appear to be in massive rotation is the music that's sending the wrong messages and it's being done intentionaly. These messages often time glorify life in the prison system, promoting and persuading young girls to have sex at much earlier ages with marriage or love being nowhere in the list of prerequsites. They are painting a picture that equates beauty and prostitution, as well making it appear strong and powerful to sell drugs. Music is now opening up doors that shouldn't be opened, shoving pandora's box into our youth's hands and minds and later fix our mouths to ask "what is wrong with the children today?" We wonder why their is so much voilence, teen preganancy, aids, low self-esteem and a lack of respect for others as well as themselves only to learn that it's all just propaganda. No one really cares, and as I stated earlier it is a slick and effective slavery method being used. Slavery for all not just one race. People this is not being done by mistake. I am a mother of two beautiful innocent little girls. It sickens me to watch music videos with them that is displaying such filth and degradation. I know that some would question why allow your children to watch, and my response is, "because they are being exposed to such evils daily" and I want to be the one to give them the proper knowledge they need to keep them from becoming so succeptable to such ignorance. It's my responsibility as a mother to provide the appropriate answers to their questions and to be their guidance. Your Rihanna's, Niki Minaj's, and Beyonce's just to name a few, are all horrible role models to young girls. These messages that are being delievered are oversexed and raunchy. I don't want my daughters striving to be anything like them, they are disgusting and have no respect for themselves. They have fallen into the trap. These ladies have forgotten that they are beautiful, young talented women whose precious gifts could be used to motivate and educate instead of disquising prostitution as an accomplishment. Not only are they selling their bodies, but their souls while also manipulating and failing youth all over the world that look up to them as being icons. I remember when music was used to educate. It painted the prettiest pictures I had ever seen of love. It made people happy, it helped some to make it through sad and rough times. It used to be cool for a man to sing about how much he loved a woman. Now the men are all about having all the woman not with intentions of loving and caring but simply to disprespect in more ways than one, whether it be just to have sex with her and leave her or pimping her for money. Music has been successful as portraying women to be deemed as worthless. Rappers are quick use the "B" word when making reference to a young lady and tend to be the most disrespecful out of them all. You have grown men wanting to be out in the streets rapping for what's considered to be fame, attracting as well as thirsting for attention of the empty women lacking self-love to stroke their empty ego's. Rap music has our young men constantly wanting to rip and run around with their "boys" or entourage and we wonder why homosexuality is becoming so prevelant. Think about it.... If this music wasn't selling dreams and painting pretty pictures of slavery, then these men would be at home being fathers to their children, husbands to their wifes, providing for their family and being the men that followed the script that God designed and created as a guide for living a happy and fulfilling life. I know that there's not to much I can really say or do to eliminate this problem. I can send this message that hopefully educate's others in efforts to provide as much protection possible for our children living in todays society. They are being marked and identified targets for destruction. It's time to stand up and reconize what's going on today and acknowledge what we see. It is time to wise up. Marvin Gaye wrote a song called "What's Going On" this song exposed a lot of issues dealing with government and officials in power. This was before it's time, because the issues are still the same and have gotten worse especially on the radio. I wonder what would've or could've happened if we were paying as close attention to the music back then as our children are doing now? Be Blessed!!!

HTC Thunderbolt vs. HTC Evo

I’m sure there’s other techie ladies out there like myself. This blog entry is definitely for you. I love discussing this stuff so at the end if you have questions, comments, points for discussion speak up.

I was inspired to write this particular blog after switching from the Evo 4g to the Thunderbolt and of course their respective carriers. The main reason for the switch was the lack of reception in my house and other places I often go. Out of fairness to the carriers because no carrier works everywhere so that is taken into consideration in any comparisons I might make. However, I intend to really do more of a comparison of phone to phone.

Prior to switching I was simply doing it for the better reception in my house as I previously stated. Having read specs on the Thunderbolt and comparing it to the Evo I thought “ok cool, this is just an Evo on Verizon’s network with more storage.” I even ran my know-it-all mouth to a friend who, let’s just say knew better, and I’m sure wanted to say something but didn’t. Fast forward 4 days when I finally got this phone and started using it. Let me just say this is me publicly EATING MY WORDS. The Thunderbolt said I see your Evo and I will crush it in my hands!

The first thing one notices is the screen. Its color is so brilliant you realize what you haven’t been seeing on the Evo’s screen immediately. There is no need for side by side it’s very obvious. It’s slightly more responsive but the Evo did not have any response time problems.

Ok here’s where it is absolutely imperative to do a comparison of network to network on these phones. The main reason is the vast difference between the wimax 4g and the LTE 4g. Again same friend tried to tell me how much better LTE is. During the last few days that the Evo was activated I did some speed tests in different places and got results ranging from 1.10 down/1.47 up to 10.07 down/3.09 up. The average was about 5.93 Mbps over the course of 4 days. These are decent results especially from a cell phone. When I got the Thunderbolt and ran speed tests there I was blown away!! On the first speed test I ran I got 21Mbps down/35Mbps up. I ran other tests and would get results around 13-15Mbps down/20 – 30+ Mbps up. I’m sure that the first week that I had the Thunderbolt I ran so many speed tests they probably thought I was crazy! It paid off. One night around 3am I did a test and got my “high score” of 35Mbps down. Using the mobile hotspot app (free until May 15th) I can tether my laptop at speeds comparable and in some cases faster than my home uverse internet.

There are a number of things that are the same on these phones. Both have an 8mp camera with dual LED flash and a 1.3 mp front camera. Both have a 1000 MHz snapdragon processor. However, the Thunder bolt boasts an updated version of the processor (MSM8650 vs. MSM8655). The performance of the phone’s screens and menus is noticeably faster and smoother than the Evo. They also improved upon the design of certain functions such as copy/cut/paste making them easier to use on the Thunderbolt.

The Thunderbolt also sports an upgraded kickstand from the Evo. The kickstand is wider yet not intrusively wide. The wider kickstand gives it more stability and allows it to be used to steady the phone in either orientation. The Evo’s kickstand only works in Landscape orientation (it’s too small *snicker*). The one thing the the Thunderbolt does not have is the hdmi out that the Evo did. It baffles me why they would remove this feature from the phone, but in the grand scheme of things it’s not that big of a deal. The Thunderbolt is also significantly lighter than the Evo. I had both in my hands and the Evo without a case was still heavier than the Thunderbolt with its hard case.

I personally really love the Thunderbolt and I’m glad I made the switch to this phone.

Get Up, Get Out, Go, Do Something...Today!

I am a small town girl that grew up afraid of many things, including the fear of flying. Yes, the fear of flying was instilled in me at a very young age. Many of the older people in my life would say things like, "if the Lord wanted us to fly he would have given us wings" and "birds are the only animals that should fly." As I have grown up, I have realized that many of the things that I was afraid of as a child were because they were unknown. The people that were saying not to fly had not ever experienced flying first hand, but quickly would say not to do it. In my opinion, this is one thing that parents need to correct because fear is paralyzing.

Think about it for one moment. A majority of the prejudice that people have do not have anything to do with first hand experience. I will use myself and my fear of flying as an example. My fear of flying caused me to miss countless opportunities to travel for free when I was younger. It was not until I was in my late twenties when my job needed me to travel for business, that I boarded my first flight. No one on this earth could have told me that I was not going to die that day. I was certain that the plane would crash. Of course it didn't and neither have the many flights I have taken since then. We need to begin challenging ourselves to broaden our horizons. Opening our minds up to new people, places and things in order to break down the walls of prejudice is key to have peace in this world.

Overcoming my fear of flying began my love affair with traveling. My personal goal is to visit all 50 states and all of the Wonders of the World! To think that if I did not overcome that one fear, I would not have enjoyed spending time jet skiing in the Gulf of Mexico, walking on the beach and playing in the Atlantic Ocean. I have enjoyed some of the best fresh seafood in the world and know the best is yet to come. All of this because I overcame just one fear and opened my mind to new experiences. Just think what you could do by overcoming just one fear.  Get Up, Get Out, Go, Do Something...Today! (You can thank me later)

Let's Go! My Trip to Ghana by Stephanie

On March 11, I boarded a plane and began what would become the most amazing and life changing experience of my life. At about 10:00am on March 12, that plane landed and I took my first steps onto the continent of Africa, yes, the motherland. I had arrived in the country of Ghana, in the city of Accra. I traveled with a group of my church members. We went for the purpose of doing a historical and cultural tour of the country and, along the way, do a little mission work. I was very excited about this trip even though I really did not know what to expect. I, like most of you, had this misperception of Africa that was based on what we see in today’s media. I was expecting to be hot and dusty and see a bunch of disease and poverty stricken people lying in the streets. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by the lush greenery, beautiful coconut, palm nut, and plantain trees, sandy beaches, beautiful waters, and a sea of beautiful black skinned people. Everywhere we went there was a smiling face, greeting us with “Akwaaba”, which means welcome.

We experienced many African traditions, including traditional drumming and dancing and a naming ceremony where I found out that if I had been born in Ghana, my name would be Akua, which means female born on a Wednesday imbued with the qualities of service and general helpfulness. We ate traditional African meals consisting of chicken, goat, fish, different types of rice, fried plantains, and many different sauces to accompany the dishes. Even though these meal items can be found on American dinner tables on any given night, the spices used and the way the food is prepared make the taste very different from anything I am used to eating. One restaurant even had a sign saying “This ain’t no fast food. It could take up to 2 hours to get your food.” All their food is prepared fresh when ordered, no sitting under heat lamps for hours…

I guess I should get on to the life changing and amazing parts of the trip. There were three parts of the trip that really had a major impact on me. These all happened in the third city we visited, Elmina. Our group did a canopy walk in the rainforest. Unfortunately my asthma did not allow me to climb the 250 foot elevation to see the forest floor from a canopy bridge. But as I sat and waited on the rest of the group to finish their canopy walk, it began to rain. My initial thought was that it is not supposed to rain when you are on vacation. But in just a few seconds it hit me that I was sitting watching the rain fall in the rainforest in Africa, and I was instantly filled with awe at the beauty of it all. I actually had to restrain myself from running out to just stand in the rain. It was truly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in nature.

On the drive from the city of Kumasi to the city of Elmina, we stopped to see what is known as Slave River. During the slave trade, captured slaves were chained together and forced to walk for months to reach the coast of Elmina where they were held in dungeons until ships came to bring them to the US. They were made to walk through wooded areas, no shoes, often no clothes. BY the time they made it here they were dirty and bloody at the very least. Keep in mind that if you had to urinate or defecate or if you were a woman with menses, you just had to go where you stood. Here at the Slave River, slaves were given their last bath before being put on the auction block. For years the waters of this river were red, blood stained from our tortured ancestors. Standing beside the river is a very large, lush, and thriving plot of bamboo. This bamboo grows on the place that the Portuguese used as a mass grave for Africans. If you were too weak to continue, or too old to continue, you were just thrown into the mass grave. If you gave birth to a baby, the baby would be thrown into the grave. There are no words to describe the feeling of standing on the banks of this river and being able to actually dip my hand into the waters where these ancestors had their last bath in their homeland.

While traveling to our hotel, The Coconut Groove Beach Resort, we passed this big beautiful white stone building sitting right on the water. Little did I know that the next day my opinion of this regal looking structure would be greatly diminished. Elmina Castle is the oldest structure on African soil built by any of the Europeans. As soon as you walk into this structure, you know that the beauty of the outside can never hide the hell that took place inside Elmina Dungeon. This place was built by the Portuguese, and used by both the Portuguese and the Dutch to facilitate their slave trade. The top floor was the Governor’s living quarters. Below this were the living quarters for the soldiers. The lower two levels were dungeons used to hold hundreds and hundreds of slaves until ships came to take them to America. The female dungeon was particularly difficult to see. As soon as you step into it, there is this smell that hits you so hard that it almost knocks you down. These women were forced to live crammed together in this tiny space, living in heat, urine, feces, menses, and death. And you can smell every ounce of it. You can feel the souls of those who were tortured and died here. Just outside these dungeons is a courtyard that is overlooked by a balcony 2 floors up. This balcony is where the Governor would stand and observe the female slaves and decide which one he wanted to rape. His chosen victim was then bathed and taken up a back stairwell to his bedroom. From the males dungeon, there is a door that my be 5 feet high that leads to the final holding space before being put onto a ship. The Door of No Return is in this space. This is the actual door that once you walk through it you never returned to your homeland and your family. By this time the slaves had been starved so they would loose weight and more could be piled into a ship. Standing in this dark, dusty, musty room, imagining the fear that my ancestors must have felt is something that I will never forget.

One of my fellow travelers said that on her first visit to Africa, she felt as if she had a hole in her filled in, a hole she did not even realize was there until it was filled. At first I did not understand. Now I do. I have always had a clear understanding that the story we have always heard about the slave trade was not a complete story. This trip allowed some of those inconsistencies and untruths to finally be cleared up. I believe I learned more about myself and my ancestors during this 10 day trip than I have in 33 years of living. This is an experience that I wish everyone could have at least once in their lifetime.

Doing to Much!!!!

I couldn't help but to initiate this discussion about the whole interracial dating scene as it relates to the black man/white woman, and my personal opinions towards it. What triggered this discussion is that I happened to be scrolling through Facebook and read a post that a young Caucasian lady posted something that I considered to be very offensive, as well as untrue. Her post read "Why Do Most Black Men Want a White Woman?" I was floored by it. She even went as far as to say that it appears the black men will have 2 or 3 black"baby mommas....but want to love and marry a white woman." Now before I go even further, I would like to mention that she considers herself to be a female rapper. Having said that, I could go as far as to say that her comment would be equivalent to asking why do MOST white women try to be Black? I know that I am not up on that genre of music as well I should be, however, I don't recall ever seeing a white female rapper. Now I am intelligent enough to know that's not the case just like the MOST black men wanting a white women is not the case either. I felt that her post could be considered not only offensive to other black women but also very arrogant. I would go as far as saying that MOST black men would like to sleep with a white women due to the whole forbidden fruit thing that goes back to slavery and the stereotype of them being considered easy. A lot of the brothers that set out to date white women tend to be suffering from the Willi Lynch Syndrome and don't even realize it. After researching and and pondering over such statements, my mind sent me back to the guys that I know personally. The guys that tend to gravitate toward white women are often times the black men that are of lower socioeconomic status with little education and lack self love. One Gentlemen made the comment that black men tend to be with white women because she is more apt to allow them to do what they want without any accountability. Now, I do completely agree that the black female needs to tone down her attitude some and learn how to compromise more, but at the same time, often these women have had to be strong and maintain for the family since slavery. I feel that the black men that tend to make the remarks about dealing with drama when involved with a black women could be debated. I see white women everyday causing a lot of drama that is unnecessary, also going as far as sending them to jail. The black woman tends to be harder on the black man because she knows their flaws as well as their strengths, and only want them to be the kings that they are. If a black man wants to deal with a white woman versus a black woman because the white woman is considered more docile would indicate that these are a group weak brothers. I have noticed black men leave their queens to be with white women who are in and out of jail, not having custody of their children and yes trying to recreate themselves as being something that they are not, for example black. It is often displayed in their dialect. I don't think that the white woman truly feels superior on the inside. I think it's a tactic used to manipulate the black man to believe such things due to their own insecurities and jealousy towards the black woman. One thing I would like to mention if you really feel that most black men want most white women and this pleases you, then stop trying to emulate the black woman by tanning and injecting yourselves. Decades ago it was considered ugly to be "so dark" and to have full lips with the full hips with an onion on your back, now more and more of your Caucasian women are purchasing these things. As I stated earlier there is nothing wrong with interracial dating, but don't get so comfortable with thinking that the black woman is insignificant or invaluable to their men because we are not. Let's not forget that these same black men have black mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers and so on. That soul is present won't be replaced. So to the white ladies that happened to be blessed with a black man be grateful but don't allow yourselves to go as far as considering yourselves superior to the black woman. If you can't say anything else about a black woman, we are proud our culture and wouldn't even consider the possibility of changing our blackness which displays confidence, something that some white women are obviously lacking based on the comments and remarks you tend to make. It's okay though, I think it would be appropriate to say that the black women truly understand and are also flattered. Be Blessed.
