Going Green: Old School vs New School

Saw This On Facebook & Had To Share!!!!

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment f or future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truly recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribbling's. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart-ass young person.

That Moment When...

3:27am.... That moment when you (the hospital MD), the ERMD, and the Radiology MD all realize that the patient has a rare disorder. That moment when you are reminded of why you chose this career. Yep, this was that moment... Have A Healthy Day!

In Our Words....

Here is our latest new blog segment! We have several ladies that write for this blog and once a week we will post random thoughts from each of them over the past week from their facebook and twitter accounts. Why? Because the random thoughts that come out of their heads are crazy and funny!

"Man oh man almost missing a flight was NOT on my bucket list! Some of you have never seen me move as fast as I dashed through the airport this morning. Made it just in time to be the last person to run up to the post final boarding call. Whew!" - McLovin' (12.15.12)

"Even though I have only purchased one gift, I'm glad that I have finally started my Christmas shopping. #lillatethisyear!" - IvyLeague (12.17.12)

"We have this thing called e-mail. It is a wonderful communication tool to send messages. Why must people write messages on post it notes and put on my desk? You are just asking for it to get stuck to something and get lost." - Adwoa (12.18.12)

"Wrapping up my shopping and it isn't 6pm! I am ahead of schedule :) #gome" - M.C. Staten

"Please please please Christmas isn't meant for you to "try" things that you knowingly shouldn't. Secondly, please stop dropping your kids and parents off at the ER because u want to shop and/or party! Come pick em up before I drop them off (and I'm not telling u where lol). Finally, show kindness and keep CHRIST in CHRISTmas. Have A Healthy Holiday!" - Dr.Collins (12.24.12)

Control: Guns? Media? Ourselves?

In light of the tragedy Sandy Hook Elementary School, it has brought the gun control debate back to the forefront of everyone including the ladies of Real. Life.Women. Talk. One common theme in our discussions is how the society here in the United States has changed so dramatically in our lifetime. As soon as this tragic event happened the knee jerk reaction was "gun control"! Now please do not get me wrong, I'm all for gun control but I'm a country girl born and raised in the South so, I'm not for banning guns. The fact of the matter is that guns have been around in this country since the freaking musket in the 1700's. These mass shootings have become a problem over the past 20 years. Therefore, in my opinion the question should be, "Why in the last 20 years?" "What has changed in the last 20 years?" The answer is easy: CULTURE AND SOCIETY!!!!

The United States is a country that has created a culture that glorifies violence. I'm not saying we look for it but we have become somewhat desensitized to it. At anytime of the day or night you can find a television program or movie with violence. The video game industry is booming with people going nuts over games like Call of Duty. In addition to glorifying violence, we also have a culture that loves to point the finger at other people for everything that goes wrong in their lives. Yes, that is correct, we have lost "personal accountability" in this great country we live in. When I grew up you were rewarded for what you did and not rewarded if you chose to do nothing. These days you have youth athletics that give everyone a trophy for just showing up regardless of how well they play. Some of these leagues do not even keep score. What exactly is this teaching a whole generation? It is teaching them that just showing up is enough. As adults, we know for a fact that is not true. So why is it alright to teach it to the children? When do we as adults break the bad news to them that you actually have to do more than show up in life to be successful?

My last point may not go over well with many of you but at this point I really don't care. This country has made a point to take God out of schools. There has been more work done to take God out of the schools in this country than there has been to make sure the students are well educated. Yet as soon as a tragedy like this one happens one of the first things people want to know is "How could God let this happen?" Well, I have the answer to that question so please pass it on if you don't mind. First of all, those of us that believe in God know that there is a God (GOOD) and that there is a devil (EVIL). With all the effort that has been put in to taking God out of the school system: no prayers, no pledge of allegiance and no mention of God at all. Why would there be any surprise when the devil shows up using a mentally ill person as his vessel? So to answer the question, how could God do this? I'm sorry but God didn't have anything to do with this.

This Weeks Real Life Woman Rants and Raves...

I am so grateful for my daddy. He was and still is the poster child of what a true man is. My daddy took care of his family, worked hard and wasn't out running the streets and women, like so many of you young men are doing now. I am truly a daddy's girl. Guys don't you want your girls and/or even your son's for that fact of the matter to think this highly of you? Well get out of the streets stop being selfish. Stop acting like little boys. Take care of your children!!! They are yours!!!! If you truly want to be respected the way a man should be, then act the way a man should! - Bobbi Jean

This Weeks Real Life Woman Rants and Raves...

I really enjoy listening to Drake speak. The other night on a talk show as I was just flipping through the channels, I caught an interview with him. He spoke very well, not dumbed down or "cool" at all. I especially noticed it because not to long ago I was listening to a radio station where all the rappers including the host sounded like they had been victims of No Child Left behind even though they were all over the age of 30 or close to it. It's time for us to get it together, we are failing! Please lose the slave mentality. When we talk ignorant it appears to most that you don't have the ability to speak correctly i.e. "Ebonics". We play ourselves every time we carry ourselves in an ignorant manner. It just seems that we don't care anymore and are just lost souls. Well I'm not a slave and I'm not raising any either. I just really wish my people would get themselves together. Each generation is getting worse and we are part of our own problem. I say we because until we collectively come together and stand up for what's right. I'm still just another dumb (insert the "N" word) like the rest because we are all grouped together. Ignorance is not bliss in Real Life. What did Spike Lee say in the movie "Do The Right Thing??? WAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEE UUUUUPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!! - Bobbi Jean

As long as I've been a nurse, I've never received so many compliments, letters of thanks, gift cards, plants, hugs, and hopes from patients that I will be back tomorrow. It makes me feel good about the job I do for those patients and families. I appreciate their recognition more than they will ever know because when you don't really like where you are, and you don't feel that you fit in, it's nice to know that the people you take care of think your great! - Lisa
Got one W-2 just waiting on one more then WE ARE OUTTA THIS SHIT HOLE....I AM SO READY!!!! - April
